Milan’s history is rich with important historical events. It has been the capital of the Western Roman Empire where in 313 a.C. the Constantin Edict was promulged. During Renaissance Milan witnessed one of its most important and rich period, welcoming some great personalities of the time as Leonardo da Vinci and Donato Bramante
Leonardo da Vinci lived and worked in Milan. All around the city it is possibile to find his art pieces and traces of his genius: the Last Supper, the Atlantic Code, and the Navigli (complex system of artificial canals)
Relevant and outstanding personalities of yesterday and today passed through Milan: three Nobel Prize in Literature Salvatore Quasimodo, Eugenio Montale e Dario Fo, the writers Alessandro Manzoni and Stendhal, the well known music composer Giuseppe Verdi, and the great theatre director Giorgio Strehler all worked and lived in Milan. The city has seen the rise and growth of many artistic movement such as Futurism and Conceptual Art.
In Milan it is possibile to visit the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, among the first libraries in Lombardy and Europe to be accessible to the public. The library is home to a huge collection of manuscripts and other documents.
The city hosts many historical institution such as Scala, Brera Academy, Piccolo Teatro and yearly it is possibile to attend esteemed cultural events that attract people from all over the world.
